Appointing a new accountant

21st July 2011

Paul from Michael Paul Accountants reviews the procedure for appointing a new accountant.

People can sometimes be reluctant to change their accountant as they believe this will no doubt be a complicated and time consuming process.  In fact this is not the case.

When we are appointed as agents for a new client who has an existing advisor the client normally only has to perform two tasks

  1. Authorise their existing advisor to supply us with the handover information
  2. Sign and return our engagement paperwork, HMRC agent authorisation forms and supply us with copies of documentation (passport, home phone bill etc) to confirm their identity for money laundering purposes.
We will contact the existing advisor requesting the handover information we require. We usually find that once the client has given authorisation to their existing advisor and paid any outstanding bills then the information arrives relatively quickly.
Once the agent authorisation has been signed and subsequently processed by HMRC we are able to access the clients information online which will inform us of any outstanding tax liabilities and future liabilities and filing deadlines.
